When climbing gaffs, spikes, or hooks are not used

Climbing gaffs are used solely in tree removal or the partial removal of a multi-trunk tree.   The use of gaffs in tree trimming is harmful to the tree.  The gaffs make puncture wounds that are open to the top.  These wounds catch water, debris, and spores.  The wounds can lead to insect infestation and the introduction of fungi that cause decay.  Gaffs can also carry disease from tree to tree.

A tree service that uses gaffs in tree trimming is either ignorant to or not worried about the health risks to your tree.  Many tree services in our area still use gaffs for tree trimming.  A competent climber can climb a tree without gaffs.  It is not a safety risk.  It is a little slower but considering the time that it takes the tree to heal, it is well worth the extra time and energy.

There are alternatives to using climbing gaffs. Contact us today for those options as well as proper trimming and maintenance of your trees.
